Happy New Year! Some Predictions for 2012
This is the time of year for armchair oracles to tell us how the New Year will unfold. It may be silly and self-indulgent, but it’s fun nonetheless, and gives us all something to debate. Most prognosticators will stick with soft, mushy, general predictions, so as not to look too bad at the end of the year, but what fun is that? No guts, no glory! So without further ado, here are the Modern Conservative predictions for 2012:
Economic doldrums will continue – This one is easy. As the holiday season temp-jobs dry-up, unemployment will spike again back over 9%, and will remain within about a point and a half of that number throughout the year.
The End of the Eurozone – More low-hanging fruit here. I expect the death throes to be protracted and painful. It may first contract, dumping a few members, but eventually it will collapse entirely, if not in 2012, then certainly soon after. As currently constituted, it is unsustainable.
The Supreme Court will Overturn ObamaCare – I could well be wrong about this one, but I think the SCOTUS will uphold part of judge Roger Vinson’s ruling on ObamaCare, striking-down the individual mandate, but overturning his ruling that the mandate is not severable from the rest of the law. Nonetheless, this will effectively kill Obamacare, as the law cannot stand without the mandate. The ruling will be 5-4.
Justice Kagan will refuse to recuse herself from the Obamacare case - Outraged conservatives will launch an impeachment drive to remove her from the court. This will ultimately force her to step-down. (Going out on a limb on this one!)
Obama will set a new record for low presidential approval ratings – I think this also is probably an easy one. Unlike Bill Clinton, who wisely moved to the middle after 1994, Obama is less interested in leading, and more interested in his own ideology, which is drastically out of step with all of America outside of the 18% or so radical leftists. It’s not so much that he won’t move to the middle, he can’t. It’s just not who he is.
The Republican nominee will NOT be Mitt Romney! – I know, I know, I’m out on a very shaky limb indeed on this one. But Romney has just not generated any emotion or enthusiasm, and I don’t think he will. We may actually have a brokered convention, which would not be such a bad thing.
The Race Card will be played so many times by the Democrats and the media, it will become little more than a cliché – THis one is also obvious, and requires no comment or explanation.
The usual members of the mainstream media will go into overdrive, working to vilify the Republican nominee - It is in fact such a shrill, partisan demonstration that a general backlash is unleashed, and the public finally starts calling for the removal and dismantling of major offending news organizations, and boycotts of their published and broadcast works. Control of the heavily leveraged New York Times is wrested from the Sulzberger family, and a major internal housecleaning follows.
Republicans will rally around their nominee - Finally they will generate some unity and enthusiasm, remembering that the real goal is to get Obama out of office.
As the election approaches, and polling indicates growing support for Republicans and the end of the Obama administration looks imminent, optimism begins to pick-up, and along with it, the economy – The aforementioned Mainstream Media desperately tries to give credit for this to Obama.
Republicans pick-up seats in the House, take control of the Senate, and win the White House – While not a landslide, it is a very strong showing.
Those are my predictions, and I’m sticking to them! I know this likely will be a very Confucian year, but hope you all have a very safe, happy and prosperous one!

We know, with not a shadow of doubt, that liberty is the best—and the most moral—choice for society. We seek to expand human liberty. To defend the individual against the state. To inspire new cooperation between conservatives, libertarians, and all those devoted to this cause, and to bring about a new renaissance of liberty.
