Democrats: Trading our soldiers' lives for political victory

Seeing victory at hand, the Democrats have found a new way to mess things up.
By Christopher Cook

The Democrats want to pass a resolution calling the Turks' WWI massacre of Armenians genocide.

Ok. Why now?

There is little doubt that what Turkey did was genocidal. It certainly fits the definition of genocide according to the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

So what is the point of saying so now, at this moment? Why not 15 years ago? Why not some other random time since 1915? Why bring it up at this precise moment? It doesn't chasten Turkey into doing something we want them to do. It's not a political issue aimed at getting more votes, as it's highly doubtful that the Democrats' constituents are calling their representatives and asking for this. It certainly doesn't bring any of the the slaughtered people back to life. So why?

There is one thing this resolution certainly will do, and that is that it will harm our relationship with Turkey, which in turn will harm our interests in Iraq, which could actually serve to destabilize the whole Middle East. Heck, it might possibly spur Turkey to invade Northern Iraq. It will also cost us more money, and it will most certainly put our soldiers at greater risk of injury and death. Those things, this resolution certainly will do. In fact, just its mention has already done harm to our relationship with Turkey.

There are only two possibilities here.

  1. The Democrats don't know any of this.
  2. The Democrats do know this, and they're proceeding anyways.

If #1 is the case, then they are irretrievably stupid.
If #2 is the case, then---you'll forgive the incendiary terminology---they've decided to become a fifth column.

One has to conclude that the second option is the case, for the simple reason that the first option cannot be the case. They are not stupid. The have too many staffers, analysts, committees, and experts to be collectively unaware of the ramifications of their actions. It's just not possible.

They know exactly what they're doing. Just at a time when things are going better in Iraq, taking away what they perceive to be their big '06 and '08 victory issue, they've found a way to mess things up. It's all about political power for the Democrats, and if they have to, they will burn this country to the ground to get it.

It's difficult, based on the facts at hand, to conclude otherwise.

And if more of our brave soldiers come home in caskets, well, that just gives them another campaign issue---another opportunity to talk about casualty levels and about how much they love the troops.....the same troops whom they are putting at greater risk with the actions.

Oh, but don't question their patriotism.

Hi y'all,
A number of people have emailed me to say, essentially, that I wasn't hard enough on the Democrats in this piece. That's delightful---I love it when people see things as they are, rather than trying to maintain a patina of "respectability." It's always a balancing act for publishing articles, of course, but let's just say that I agree with the emails. I make the following clarification...

This event doesn't make the Dems a fifth column---they've, at times, acted as such on numerous occasions over the last 40 years. This event, however, crosses a very bright line, a line that should be obvious to everyone.

As an Armenian who grew up with the pain that the genocide and its flat out denial by the Turkish government caused the victims, I am appalled that the Congress doesn’t not pass the resolution... I mean the Turkish Congress. That's were the skeletons are. Once again, just like with everything else, it is America's fault. Everyone is outraged that the US Government is not passing a symbolic resolution. Well, as an Armenian-American I am very grateful to all the brave American missionaries who risked their lives helping Armenians during the genocide. However, I would love to see this bill passed in Ankara not in Washington. The US House actually passed this bill in 1980's. (it was killed later in the Senate) Meanwhile, in 1988 tens of thousands of Armenians were massacred by Azeri Turks. I saw the survivors fleeing to Armenia. They were beat, raped, mutilated. Just like during the first genocide they were citizens of a Turkish country and their government turned against them because they were Armenians. This time we decided that it will never repeat again. We went to war, liberated all the Armenian territories in Azerbaijan and got 10% of their land just in case. That is my answer to genocide denial. If the US Congress passes the bill, thanks. But, I really don't want to see my fellow Americans die for a symbolic measure that means nothing to the Turkish Government. Trust me, they passed the point of being humiliated for the crimes against humanity many years ago. Frankly, I don’t even care if the Turkish Government accepts it. I know it happened and I am buying guns so it doesn’t happen again. In short, I don't want to be a victim and beg others to accept my pain. We all know that road will eventually lead us to a Congress subsidized ghetto. I come from a generation of Armenians who were victorious, we settled our scores with all we had and we will continue to do so… and let the vengeance for millions of people killed be God's. He is much better at that than a bunch of Democrats and Republicans who can't even close their own borders.

Thank you, Yervand, for posting your comments here. As a friend, colleague, and American of Armenian birth, your views on this matter to me more than just about everybody's.

You know, the whole situation might lend itself slightly more to discussion if we thought for even one minute that the Democrats cared a jot for the Armenian people. Then, at least, we could have a reasoned discussion with them about how this is a really bad idea. But they don't care. At all. This is designed---and timed---to do only one thing: undermine America's efforts, when she has a Republican at the helm.

Several decades ago, the Democrats began a process of de-Americanizing themselves. Over time, they became what they are today: not an American political party, but rather just the American arm of the international left.

And no, it doesn't matter that not every single Democrat is like that. That is what their party is. That is what thir ideology is. If you're a Democrat, and you feel like this does not describe you, then get out now. Become an independent of a Republican. Your Party is blighted. It has been blighted from the moment it became the Party of Slavery, and it remains rotten to this day. You've grafted yourself to a bad tree. Get out, get out, get out, and come on over to the side of light.
