Returning soldiers gunning for Democrats

For the left, the Iraq war nightmare is still yet to come. By Christopher Cook
During the 2002 elections, Democrats became what Ann Coulter, in her book How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must), colorfully called "jock-sniffers for war veterans." First among these vets was Senator Max Cleland, Democrat from Georgia. In an election cycle that was---in spite of what some push-pollers tried to engineer---NOT looking good for Democrats, they needed all the help they could get. Holding on to Cleland's seat in the heart of the once-reliably Democratic South was crucial.
The Democrats were well aware that, post-1968 at least, their record with the people on military matters was spotty at best. They knew that many of the people who currently make up their base today were, in their younger years, the same people who helped engineer a loss in Vietnam. Some of those people even spat on returning soldiers and called them "baby-killers." As we moved into the 80s, the Democrats became ever-more dovish, going so far as to oppose the sensible notion of developing missile defense systems to protect the United States from incoming Soviet ICBMs, while simultaneously suggesting that the USSR would have to be accommodated, because it could not possibly be defeated. As their credibility on foreign policy and military matters continued to wane, responsible voices like that of Scoop Jackson became increasingly rare (to the point where today, Joe Lieberman may be the only one left, and he was essentially ousted from the Party in 2006).
Then, President Clinton came on the scene. Not only was he the first president since FDR not to have served in the military himself, but his personal dislike for the military was generally known by the average American. He was widely considered a draft-dodger. He was known to have written that he "loathed" the military. His disdain for national security generally was the subject of debate, caricature, and even books by direct eyewitnesses .
This image of a draft-dodging, pot-smoking, military-loathing Commander-in-Chief ---who appeared occasionally to be using the military to distract from his domestic problems, and who didn't even know how to salute properly---did not help the Democrats' already-tainted image on military matters. Then, after three decades of this sliding image, the post-Clinton Democrats finally came up with a solution: Continue to oppose military spending, military deployments, and the development of military equipment, but tell everyone how much you love and support the troops. In 2002, Senator Cleland was the poster-child for this strategy. Not only was he a Vietnam veteran, but he had lost two legs and an arm in a grenade accident, placing him permanently in a wheelchair. Democrats and their fellow travelers in the press set to work sexing-up the nature of his grenade accident, so that people would believe it had happened under enemy fire. It did not (it actually occurred when Cleland was on his way to drink a few beers with friends near Khe Sanh), but that did not stop the press from fabricating out of whole cloth a series of tales about how he had received his injuries in combat. (Ann Coulter dispositively---and rather brutally---destroys these claims in How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must) .)
It should go without saying that all good Americans should thank Cleland for his service and his sacrifice, no matter how his specific injuries occurred, and this author would tell him so in person, given the chance. But that's not the point here. The point is that after three decades, the Democrats had finally found a way to burnish their image on military matters: Pick a veteran who agrees with them on the substance of a military issue, and then play up the fact of his service as cover for that position. To us, sexing up Cleland's injuries is a distasteful display of dishonesty and gamesmanship, one that dishonors a record that should be honored. To the Democrats---who are still not quite sure how this whole military honor thing works anyways---it's just more smoke to cover their reflexively anti-military (and usually unpopular) positions.
Enter John Kerry. After the Commander-in-Chief who didn't even know how to salute correctly, Senator Kerry was, in the Democrats' view, a gift as a presidential candidate. George W. Bush had "only" served in the National Guard, whereas Kerry was a veteran of combat in Vietnam. For the Democrats, it didn't matter that Kerry had also thrown his someone else's medals to the ground in an anti-war protest...confabulated a tale of a secret Christmas Eve trip into Cambodia with a CIA officer and a magic hat...and made baseless accusations that his fellow soldiers were committing atrocities and war crimes. It didn't matter that his voting record in the Senate on intelligence and military matters was to the left of Senator Kennedy's. Nope. The Dems had their war veteran---the American people were supposed to shut up and accept this as a sign of their strength on national security matters.
It also---or so they thought---inoculated Kerry against criticism.
Just like they had done during Cleland's Senate race, they tried to convince the American people that GOP opposition to Kerry on policy matters was tantamount to a slander against the military, since he himself was a vet. In a disturbing---and yet laughably textbook---display of projection, the Democrats were trying to project their own distaste for the military onto others. See, they're against a veteran! We're not against the military, THEY ARE.
Next came Jack Murtha. Running with shaky information written by anti-war leftist journalists, Rep. Murtha accused Marines in Iraq of atrocities and war crimes at Haditha. (The case is ongoing, but it's noteworthy that several of the accused have already been exonerated.) This deeply disgusting display---a member of the House of Representatives of the United States, in the advance of any convictions or hard evidence, accusing the soldiers of his own country of war crimes---was off-limits for criticism....because Murtha himself had served. This, they thought, should shield Murtha from criticism, and they used him to give their anti-war, anti-military positions more cover. See, the Iraq war is a mistake. Our soldiers are baby-killers. A veteran said so!
Apparently (their senses of irony having been surgically removed at birth) they don't realize that using a soldier as the vehicle to accuse other soldiers of war crimes does very little to attenuate the general contemptuousness inherent in the accusation.
During this same period, the "chickenhawk" meme developed on the left. Usually employed by bloggers, activists, and some pundits, it's a new tool in this bag of tricks. The technique is simple: If someone supports the war or criticizes the positions of an opponent of the war, don't deal with the substance, just ask if that person served in the military. Unless the answer is yes, that person's viewpoint is (in the view of the person slinging the "chickenhawk" epithet, at least) discredited.
Well, as the Bard said, what is past is prologue. The era of the Democrats being "jock sniffers for war veterans" is coming to a close.
The hostility towards the ROTC on campuses is heating up again, with a number of incidents of vandalism having occurred in recent months.
Democrat politicians are starting to let the mask fall, such as with Senator Schumer's recent slur against the troops in Al Anbar.
The Hollywood left (which, having lived and worked in Hollywood, I can tell you is mostly left) is pumping out more and more brazen examples of the standard military-slurring films. In the last few years, however, they've also begun departing from their regular fare of "supporting" the troops by portraying them as dysfunctional, broken, war-addled victims to making films that directly portray them as war criminals.
Most recently, the left---including their putative favorite for '08, Hillary Clinton---called General Petraeus, the commander of our forces in Iraq, a liar. This, after the beating heart of their ideology, the Soros-funded MoveOn.org, called this general, a decorated and honorable servant of his country, a traitor in an ad in the New York Times. An ad for which the Times charged them a reduced rate. An ad that most Democrats could not bring themselves to oppose, even in a non-binding, Sense-of-the-Senate amendment.
For many months now, I have been pointing these things out, and each time, I have said, don't believe their "we support the troops but not their mission" drivel---it's just a smokescreen, and it won't last. And sure enough, that is coming to pass.
But folks, we haven't seen anything yet.
There's a new class of soldiers being made now, on the battlefields of Iraq. Let's talk a little about them, because in the upcoming decade, they are going to drive the left to levels of military-hatred that we've not seen since Vietnam.
•They are, contrary to the left's claims, not disproportionally poor. In fact, they come from higher-income backgrounds than the general American populace.
•They are also, contrary to the left's claims, not poorly educated. They have a higher average education level than the general populace.
•They are also, contrary to the left's claims, not overwhelmingly minorities, desperate to find a way out of poverty and despair. They represent, in relative demographic proportions, all of the ethnic groups of the United States. If there is any disproportional representation, it is regional: the south, midwest, and interior west have sent a greater share of their sons and daughters than the northeast or west coast. (Note that that also mirrors the red-state/blue-state divide in this country; make of that what you will.)
•They are mostly young men and women today, growing up on the battlefields of Iraq. In comparison to the average of their peers back home, they are far more responsible, clear-headed, accomplished, and even wise. They are becoming, each and every one of them, a leader in his or her own right.
•They comprise a smaller percentage of the total populace than has fought in America's previous wars. They are fighting and dying for a populace that has not had to sacrifice the way Americans have in the past. They love America and would die for their families, and all of us, to be free. Yet, at the same time, they realize that the average American is not as invested in this war as we were in the past. As one of them penned on a whiteboard in a Marine installation, "America is not at war. The Marine Corps is at war. America is at the mall."
•They are fighting and dying in a cause they believe they can win. They are, contrary to the left's propaganda, regularly thanked and welcomed by Iraqis (though to varying degrees based on location, circumstance, and date). They know they are fighting for the Iraqi people's future as well as America's security. They know the nobility and necessity of their cause. They are reenlisting in numbers that exceed retention goals, in spite of long tours and harsh conditions. They do this because they know the truth. They know the good they've done, and they know that with support from home, they can win.
•And they know that support is exactly what they are not getting. Contrary to the picture painted by the left, they are not a bunch of stupid jarheads, victims of Bush's war at best and war criminals at worst. They are smart and savvy, and they see exactly what is going on. They see the media fibricating™ a picture of Iraq that fits an agenda, but not the facts on the ground. They hear the things that are said about them by Democrat pundits and politicians. They watch as Congress plays games with their funding and their mission, all for political gain.
So, what is going to happen, as these soldiers begin to return home? Will returning back to America erase the memories of the serial betrayals, lies, and political gamesmanship of the Democrats and the media, all done at the expense of the soldiers and their mission? Will they forget about their comrades who died, who might have lived had the enemy not been emboldened by the weakness they perceived on the American home-front?
Guess what, Democrats. These young men and women are going to be coming home. They're going to be armed with the knowledge, responsibility, wisdom, and leadership ability they gained in the military. They're not going to forget what happened on the home front, and they won't forget which side of the political spectrum did it to them.
And they're going to be running for office.
It'll be just a few at first, but their numbers will grow as more return home and get settled.
They are the next generation of America's leaders, and unlike the 60s set, they did not grow up smoking doobies, dodging the draft, and generally setting about the task of eroding the foundations of civilization.
They will not be Democrats, by and large. They have been steeled by the fire of combat, and after jihadis, IEDs, scorpions, and 130 degree heat, they will be eating their Democrat opponents for breakfast.
Take a good look, baby-boomers....your time is coming to an end. The soldiers are coming home, they know what you did last summer, and they'll be taking over now, thank you very much.
Oo look, here's one now! And, not only will he soon be taking on the Democrats, he's now taking on a corrupt, old-guard Republican in the primary.
Generations turn. The old guard surrenders to the new. It is the way of things. There are even a few old Republicans who need to---and will---move aside sooner rather than later. But by-and-large, this new generation is going to be gunning for Democrats, and over the next decades, a lot is going to change.
Don't expect the Democrats to go quietly, or to pass the torch with a smile. These soldiers represent not only the face of everything they've hated for thirty years, they also represent the face of their electoral doom.
Imagine the Democrats' hatred for all things military as a seething, roiling liquid contained in a cast-iron cauldron. Six years ago or so, they put a lid on that cauldron, hoping to conceal the angry stew within.
Now, imagine that lid being blown off forcefully, by an explosion of fermenting rage, and you're beginning to get a picture of what's going to happen.

There are so many wonderful, interesting, supporting, (and also some provocative) comments appended hereto. Thank you all so much! I intend to continue answering as many as I can, within the comments section. There is one element that I'd like to clarify here at the end of the article, however.
A small number of people have the impression (based on what they are writing in their comments) that I myself am serving in the United States military. I am not. I am not sure exactly how I managed to create that impression in my article, but it was not my intent at all. I am a civilian.
I love, honor, and support our brave forces. I thank them when I get the chance, and I thank God for the country they defend in my prayers each night. And, as I indicate in this article, I predict that they will continue helping to protect and preserve this nation, even after their tours are over. But I myself am not among their ranks; I am just among the American civilians who see them as the primary reason that I have the wonderful life I do in this great land.
11:01 AM, Oct. 1:
Pictured at the beginning of this article is Eric Egland, a soldier running in the primary against a corrupt Republican. He needs your help. A number of people have thought that was a picture of me, the author of this article. It is not, and I just wanted to make sure that is clear. He's the hero. All I'm doing is writing the story.

Spot on! This generation has stepped up to serve and once home will continue to serve. The liberal socialists will start running for the middle in the next decade... just need to remember who they really are.

Dang,
I wish I had written this. Really, really good and very true.
These Liberal Democrat Politicians are living on borrowed time. I only hope our guys get home and get involved before the Left begin taking away our freedoms in activities like reinstating the grossly mislabeled "Fairness Doctrine."
Keep up the good work,
Those who serve in the military serve every American and truly are deserving of name 'Hero."
God Bless and protect our troops and their families.

Posted by DAN HETFIELD on 2007-09-28 13:26:43 |
Dear Dan, It is you who has made MY day better. This article was posted on FreeRepublic, and a Vietnam vet over there has been screaming and cussing at meover the fact that I mentioned baby-boomers. I did explain myself, and though he had no interest, I don't take it personally at all. Moreover, most people understood and some stood up for the points I was making.
Still, it is really nice to have you, a vet, thanking me. It is I who thank you, not only for your comment, but for the fact that I, and my wife and child, continue to breathe the fresh air of freedom.

Chris: I am in awe of your military service and accomplishments. Very few in American history have risked and sacrificed as much as you in defense of our country. I am so proud that you are not one of those conservative, republican, warmongers who are too cowardly to serve and risk your life in defense of everything we hold dear. The cowards who champion their multiple wargasms, while refusing to enlist are disgusting.

Christopher, thank you for an excellent piece. I'm the webmaster at Old War Dogs, a team blog where Nam-era and older vets can share their thoughts with the public. Two of my fellow Dogs emailed to make sure I saw your post, and if they hadn't I'd have seen it on Mr. Hooker's site anyway. Thanks for the morale boost, started out in RVN, finished up in Afghanistan, watched the liberals destroy my generation when we came home Kerry and his lying "winter soldiers", this generation won't let that happen. One son in Iraq now, one already Iraqi vet, both line soldiers. Keep up the fine wind.

Christopher, your piece appears to be well-researched. Still, it is so blatantly one-sided that it loses much of its credibility. First, anyone who relies on Ann Coulter as an information source desperately needs counseling immediately. Second, nowhere in here do you mention how corrupt, inept, misbegotten and Nazi-like this present administration has been. Truth be told, the Reps pulling the strings don't give one rat's behind for you or your military friends. Their interest primarily is MAKING THE RICH RICHER AND YOU POORER. They figure if they can keep throwing tax breaks to the rich. they will get enough return donations to stay in power forever. Whoever they have to bulls--- in the process --the military, the religious right -- to achieve that goal, so be it. You and others like you wind up being played for suckers, to facilitate Rep domination. I believe sincerely that if you could quell the loathing you have for the Dems for several minutes, this might actually dawn on you. They're not your friend. Both parties have thieves, but it has been documented that the Reps have at least twice as many. Think of all the scandals involving Reps. Where exactly does that fit in with your core values? If you can come up with a solid answer to that, I won't utter another word.

Christopher, (1) WOW!!! I just found out that you and your Blog existed! (2) Your essay about returning vets is inspirational! (3) Charles Noble should go back to lurking. He illustrates perfectly what the dems are going to do when our vets get back. (Drum Roll and demoniacal laughter for Charles) (4) I'm a Vietnam vet and retired Air Force electronics technician and just wanted to thank you and let you know how much I thought of your essay. Did you send it to O'Reilly, Coulter, and Ingraham? If not, you should. It's GOOOD, Man! (A la Dennis Hopper.)

Chuck,,
Whatever the perceived evil's you think this current administration has, it's typical that the left somehow has to label them as "Nazi-like ", as if there is really a moral equivalency to the bush administration and the 3rd Reich? How lovely.

Chris, thanks for this post. It gives great hope. I've been very concerned about our country that I love. I've been wondering if it was going to be taken over by communism - I mean socialism. I see it voted in last election, I see it in our colleges and I see it in people's desire to "play like everything is ok."

Charles Nobles..Lets start with Ted "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it" Kennedy, then we'll stop by Dick "the Turban" Durbin, who compares our troops to the regime of Pol Pot; then a quck fly-by of John "they murdered innocent civilians in cold blood" Murtha; and then, let's see, there's just so many and so little time. Oh lerts not forget Bill "I loathe the miltary" klintoon; John F'ng sKerry, (he served in Viet Nam), and gave Viet Nam veterans the finger on 16 September 2007 as he was leaving the studios of NBC. "Dingy" Harry "the war is lost" Ried; Nancy "she looks better in a burkha" Pelosi;
hobnobbing with a state sponsor of terrorism.
NO No, son, take that crap to Democratic Undergound where it belongs.
Chris, sorry Sir, but I had to say something. Dealing with the rabid anti-America pro-terrorist, pro-war left wing extremists every week has left me short tempered.

One more Viet Nam vet chiming in with thanks and praise. Our generation of vets came home to indifference at best, and most of us went to work, started families, locked the war away. Meanwhile, the leftist elements (including a few vets) went into politics and have done enormous damage since. Your guys cannot make the mistake we made, they absolutely need to get into politics and wrench the rudder of power from the leftists and move us back towards the classic values and common sense that made us great. (And yes, Republican politicians have their flaws as well, whatever party the next generation joins, the need for common sense and core values is what is paramount.) God bless your guys, and may they bring a new and better time into being.

The Republicans have shown no inclination or interest in seeking out Veterans as candidates. They failed to do this after the First Gulf War and they haven't done it since. Apparently they treat the Veteran vote the same way as Democrats trat the Black vote. It is up to other Veterans to identify, propose and support good candidates, because the Republican Party won't.

Not all Baby Boomers were cowards only the ones the MSM allowed you to hear about. Your article summerized everything I have watched the Left do since 1969 when I goined the Navy. It will be a great day when the Baby Boomers like Bill and Hitlery move off the stage and turn it over to the outstanding Veterans carrying on the fight for freedom today. I work with Coaties on a daily basis, but I love the young tough ground pounder of today. Symbolized by some young kid who grew up with a loving mom and pop scheltered at home hanging out at the mall and playing video games with his friends and can still be counted on to go around the world and kick ass. The Spartan courage at Termopolye (SP?) is still seen in every convoy driver in Iraq or Afgan. today. You points on the future political consiquences made my day. Mister Nobles, like many of his superstitious, poorly educated Leftist ilk, roots his arguments in talking points, emotion and self-righteousness. Do not confront the Left with facts or full historical context. And above all, do not feel you're entitled to deprive them of the shiny toys they love to play with in their playpens: the words "Nazi" and "chickenhawk," unfounded cliches about "Rethuglicans," and untested, unreasoning hatred of the military and George W. Bush.
Democratic Underground types resemble terrorists in that reasoning with them is futile. Arguing with them only degrades the debater. Don't even accept the terms of their arguments. Defeating them is the only option.
And Chris, you've laid out one very hopeful option. Thanks for the post.

To Charles Noble, the cowardly neocom with the hidden email, wearing a hood like his fellow terrorists in the new Democrat party:
From the perspective of history, having lived through periods of truly great deeds done by Democrats of past eras, you are not worthy to be toilet paper for people like Scoop Jackson or Joe Lieberman. I do not see an idea, party platform plank, philosophy or goal coming out of the current crop of Neocoms that shouldn't be swept back into the dustbin of history whence it came. You truly prove the old adage that if you aren't a liberal when you're 20 you have no heart, if you aren't a conservative by 40 you have no brain!
God and Chris Cook please save America from people like you, Charles!

If ANYONE knows of a veteran who is need of information for future employment - PLEASE send them my email address. I work for the recruitment dept. of a federal agency that has one foot in DoD and the other in the IC. We highly value the experience our vets can bring.

How wonderful on a Sunday to
wake up and find this fantastic
article on the vets regarding the
future of the dems.
They should be shaking in their
boots, and they deserve to lose
a great deal of their power that
they use to degrade the forces
and the president.
Thanks

"the Democrats' hatred for all things military "
So, you react by spending the last seven years propping up a military deserter, Bush.
Plus, a guy that got five, count'em FIVE, draft deferments, Cheney.
Nice.
They're responsible for sending an unprepared and unequipped military into an situation with no strategy, and where victory is not even available. Ever.
A war for profit and nothing else.
You people can stick your heads in the sand all you want. Reality will still be here when you come up for air.

Will Malven: "These Liberal Democrat Politicians are living on borrowed time."
Actually, if you look at the demographics of the matter, it is the GOP which is living on borrowed time:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/09/AR2006050901841.html
As things stand right now, the demographic situation in the USA is just about hopeless - certainly in terms of electing politicians who will pay any fealty to classical notions of limited government & the rule of law.
Dubyah might just be the last GOP president we ever see in the USA [and Dubyah himself wasn't exactly a champion of limited government or the rule of law].
That could change, and there are possible scenarios in which the great ship of state is righted, but, in all likelihood, the republic, as we knew her, is doomed.
What will emerge, I know not, but I doubt that it will be pretty.

Reality, your name should be "Denies Reality". You sound like your idiot Presidential hopeful, the Breck Girl with his "the war on Terrorism is just a bumper sticker" comment.
You can deny that the battle for Iraq was necessary all you want, but it must be getting harder even for you to deny that battle is not only winable but is being won, as long as we can keep people like you from snaching defeat from the jaws of victory. No wonder you're getting desperate, what happens to you if we win?
I am more and more convinced that we have, in our current military, another "Greatest Generation", including my soon to be a Ranger grandson. I am getting more and more optimistic about the war with islamofacsists lately, I see lots of people like Chris coming to the fore and I like what I see! My family has fought in every war this country has been in since the early 1600's and I believe in the greatness of America, I think we have been a gift to the world like no other!
So Reality, have your tantrum, think what you want about the current administration, but everyone who has actually spent time with President Bush seems to come away with the understanding that he is "spooky" smart, committed, a real leader as opposed to the weathervanes on the democrat side trying to convince minorities that they know better how to lead this country.

I came over here from L.com also, and you have one fine article here. I'm teaching college, have had a bunch of Army and Marine guys between deployments, and I have to agree they are smart and savvy. I don't know how many will try politics, but the ones I met will succeed in whatever they try. Again, great work.

Sorry to hear that you don't like it differing from yours, and that you need a moist towlette to wipe your monitor from that spittle. Just because people's opinion differs from yours, doesn't mean you get to shout them down, or shut them down.

Chris,
You made my day too. I'm 65. and have not served.
Have been a Goldwater Rep. since 1964.
I cannot tell you how ashamed I have been of the anti-war, anti-military, anti-American left in America. It always seems as though they are winning and we are losing...yes, I too go back to the Viet Nam era, when we were forced into defeat,
to this day, where they have skillfully vilified one of our finer commanders in chief and they have taken that to disgusting levels, as Coach has done once again in an above blog.
I hope and pray that I live long enough to see your vision of America's future come to fruition. Saddly , I feel, that if the present motely group ie. Clinton and Clinton, sieze power again by use or their naturally occurring decietful ploys we will need to wait a very long time..Just think of the damage they have caused us as a nation and a society during their first eight years...My simplistic view of things has more or less been...LBJ and the Viet Nam era was the beginning of the end...the Clintons ARE the end.

One reason the Leftists are so militant today ... they know that time is not on their side when it comes to Saving the Legacy of Woodstock Nation.
This article gives me hope that we can speed up the clock on them.
(BTW, spending several hundred hours flying Century Series fighters which could very easily kill you -- even in peacetime -- still qualifies as "military service". It also gives the lie to anyone who calls such a pilot "dumb".)

Well, it looks like it is one side thought and if you don't support the war, you are some type of traitor. What the hell are we defending, freedom over there, and lost of freedom at home? I'm a vet, I did not brave but I served my time in that useless Vietnam War. About a year about I saw our President shaking hands with some Vietnam official about increasing trade. What changed? They won--well, they did; they are still commie--even they don't know, and the government of South Vietnam doesn't exist. We all know that--now look ahead at Iraq. We are fighting a no win war--they will never understand freedom of religion and once we leave--1 year from now or 30, it will be a bloodbath for them. They are not even taking care of our wounded veterans, and mark my words, once the war settles down, they poor soldiers will be forgotten. Oh, they will build some sort of wall in Washington, veterans will come with sand or cacti to place before the ones that didn't come back, and life will go on. Nothing changed in Vietnam but 58,000 killed and nothing will change in Iraq. The average American hasn't a clue, and don't you notice that the "Support the Troops" on backs of cars is fading. Re-instate the draft or pay for the war as we go, and the war will be over.

Excellent well thought out article which needs to be said -over and over. I can't be around liberals & their ignorant dangerous thinking. They are ruining the country with what they are doing thru laws, prohibitions (wire tapping). If you tell them truth they say" oh, I don't believe that", & are alarmingly ignorant and believe only what the NYTimes.WAPO etc says. God help us if we can't unite about the Rep. candidate and Shillery slides in. We will go furthur down the socialistic tubes.Send help fast!

Another Viet-Nam era vet congratulating you sir for a fine article. It made shivers run up my spine with the hope that it gives me in the truth of what you say in your post. As one of the boomer generation I'm filled mostly with disgust at my generation and the near ruin my cohort has brought to our country. I now have more than a glimmer of hope for our home as these fine young warriors take their places in restoring America to the vision of the founding fathers. Thank you again for your encouraging words and for your service.

To all of the military personnel and veterans posting comments here:
Thank you so much for your encouragement, enthusiasm, and kind words! It is all of us who should be thanking you!
It is so gratifying to me that veterans have been almost universally positive in their comments. I am touched. Over on the Free Republic thread for this article, the same thing was mostly the case, except for one veteran who was very cross with me. His complaint was that I was tarring all baby-boomers, when many of them were not like the marxist hippies of 60s ill-repute. I tried to explain myself, but he just cussed at me. The truth is, I don't bear him any ill will for his opinions. He knows that his generation is, tragically, defined by those 60s fools, and I am sure he doesn't like being lumped in with them. So, to him, and to all his fellow baby-boomers, I say the following:
I know that all of you were not a part of the dirty-foot crowd. I know that the majority of you were not. That being said, it is that crowd that DEFINES your generation. They set the agenda, they changed the course of American society, and now, they are teaching our children, creating our entertainment, and reporting our news (if you can call it "news"). Patriotic, pro-troops, family-friendly baby-boomer-Americans are not in control of America's information-dissemination networks, the left is. That's just the way it is. For example---did you know that Vietnam veterans are actually better-adjusted and more successful than their peers in their age group? You'd never know if from watching how the 60s crowd portrays them in films. If proud baby-boomer vietnam veterans were in charge of making the movies, then they surely would not be (almost invariably) depicted as confused, shell-shocked, drug-addled, homeless victims.
Not everyone in the "Greatest Generation" was "great," but we still define that generation by the greatness shown by so many. Unfortunately, even though not every baby-boomer was (or is) a neo-marxist useful idiot, that is how that generation is defined, and given the current activities of many of those same boomers, little has been done to mitigate that definition.
I have heard many wise boomers say that they are ashamed of their generation. I've heard Dennis Prager say it many times, and he is one of the wisest people I have heard in my life. At least two commenters here (James Hooker and Joachim Klehe) have said it. They're not talking about everyone either---they're just talking about those who have defined the generation, and whose activities have created an aggregate effect that is, shall we say, less-than-desirable.
I guess what I am saying, in this longer-than-planned comment, is that I am not trying to step on any babyboomers' toes here. I am just a late GenX-er, trying to call them as I see them....and working 80-90 hour weeks trying to do my part so that I too do not have to look back later and say, I am ashamed of my generation
Posted by Christopher Cook on 2007-09-30 18:18:27 |
Did I say "late Gen-X"? I meant "early."

Excellent piece, and I sincerely hope that it is prophetic. My greatest fear is the election of Hillary Clinton, the most dangerous politician in the world. And don't forget that 50% of the population is of below average intelligence. That is what she is counting on!!

Lucius Vorenus:
The demographic problem that you cite is because many people are no longer having babies. After taking in lungfuls of the volcanic outgassing of narcissism concomitant with the 1960s, many of us are now too selfishly busy with our own lives to make the sacrifices required to bring new lives into this world. We're not yet as bad-off as Western Europe, but we're headed there fast.
C'mon people now, get married and make babies---quick!

Thank you for such a well written piece. And yes, we are returning with a strong resolve and will change the face of politics....so, for all those who aren't paying attention it may come as a shock....but for those of us who are on the front lines and experiencing the lack of REAL support from Congress right now, we know! But I would also like to say "Thank You" to the members of Congress who have visited us because they cared and not just for a self-serving photo op. For those...stay home, we don't need the false and fake caring. For those who took the time to sit down and listen to what we had to say...I thank you. And a prime example of those were two Democrats....Patrick Murphy and Steve Rothman. I had a great conversation with both of these gentleman and I appreciate the time they gave me. Not all Democrats are out to wipe the military off the budget but I see on both sides that they are trying to make sure we are properly equipped and supported.
And as for the Dem's (John Kerry) saying we are "uneducated"....I am currently serving with well over 1/2 of my unit possessing Bachelor's Degrees and several of us pursuing Master's Degrees...even while in combat! I am proud of my service....and every veteran of OIF and OEF should be as well....we have fought hard and deserve to feel good about what we are doing.

Chris, thanks for a great article!!! It's great to read the variety of comments your story has elicited. It’s the squeaky wheel that gets all the grease & that’s why those liberal dems get so much press – they can’t stop crying long enough for anyone else to get a word in edgewise – so I’m very pleased when I read a Republican’s point of view. Keep up the good work & keep fighting the good fight!!!

I was engaged in the VietNam unpleasantries intimately. We won the GD war then the D'rats sold the South Vietnamese down the drain as the left is wont to do when the United States interests are at stake.

Excellent article Chris. As the son of a 3-tour Vietnam vet I have a different perspective on articles like yours. I saw what the 60's anti-war movement did to my father and mother, and watched the genocidal horror after Congress defunded our efforts. The leftists and media forced us to abondon our allies by the millions to torture, oppression, and death.
Modern Democrats and media would have the same for the war against Islamic terror. Democrats would see us all dead for a majority in congress and the Presidency in 08, no question.
Thank goodness for the good sense our soldiers, and their courage (and that of their families). And also for people like you Chris, and others on the Internet struggling to show the truth: Charles Johnson at LittleGreenFootballs.com, Ace of Spades, and FreeRepublic.com in particular.
I have a new bumper sticker of my own, but I don't think John Edwards will like it: "Support Terrorism, Vote Democrat!"
